Robert Samuelson reminds us of the vanity of politicians: “Politicians, in their most self-important moments, see themselves as instruments of national destiny. They yearn to be remembered as the architects and agents of great social and economic transformations.”

And when the transformation proves to be a disaster sometime after the politician is out of office? Oh well. There will be enough other people in the interim to receive the blame.
