A simple but powerful way to expand choices for individuals is to allow federally chartered private health plans to operate across state lines. In Medicare, Maine's seniors are combined with New Hampshire's so both have more choices than if they were limited by state boundaries. Why can't we do the same with private coverage for individuals and small businesses?

Here in Maine, only two private insurance companies sell to families and individuals, while just three are available to small businesses. This limited choice creates premiums many Maine families cannot afford.

In New Hampshire, there are 11 and 14 companies, respectively, from which to choose. Why shouldn't Maine residents have access to the affordable options that residents in other New England states enjoy?
