28,028 Miles on the Road

Stephen Moses, president of the Center for Long-Term Care Reform, Inc. , has completed his "National Consciousness Tour in a retro travel trailer nicknamed the "Silver Bullet." Total distance traveled: 28,028 miles, through 41 states. The center " is a private institute dedicated to ensuring quality long-term care for all Americans by promoting public policy that targets scarce public resources to the neediest, while encouraging people who are young, healthy and affluent enough, to take responsibility for themselves."

You can watch some interviews and other videos from the tour on the center's YouTube channel.

Long-term care (aka "nursing homes") is a good example of how public programs crowd out private sector commercial interests as well as private initiative. Why bother anticipating that you may need to spend $7,000 a month on nursing home care when "government" (Medicaid) will pay for it for you–and when lawyers are standing by to engage in a little "Medicaid planning" to help you qualify? Meanwhile, the market for commercial long-term care insurance is stunted by the fact that Medicaid has become a financial backstop for middle-class families–not quite the intended beneficiaries of Medicaid.
